This is a blog collecting notes and thoughts on issues in coaching and the culture of youth sports. While the primary interest is youth sports, issues at any level of coaching are fair game.
I am a high school basketball coach and former high school athletic director. I have a ten year-old son who plays several sports. While I obviously have a strong opinion about many of these issues, my goal is not to proselytize, but rather to present the issues in a fairly even-handed fashion. I welcome comments from anyone interested regardless of your stance on any particular issue.
Any views I express here are my own and not necessarily representative of any group with whom I am affiliated.
Rocky Bleier, from an interview with Pat McInally:
In the purity of youngsters’ minds, they can do anything. But parents, coaches and friends keep hitting them with ‘reality’ — that they’re not big enough, fast enough or smart enough — creating doubt in their minds. They need support, belief in them, not negative reinforcement or ‘protection’ from failure.
